As a writer, I get lots of questions about my current work, past work, future work, and inspirations. I’ve already shared five of the questions I get most often, but now I thought I’d share five more with you!
1. What authors have inspired you?
I am heavily inspired by Agatha Christie. Her book, And Then There Were None, is my favourite book and I hope to write something as genius as it one day. As one of the best-selling authors of all time, I hope to one day come close to the success has achieved.
2. What’s the best advice you have ever heard?
My grade 11 Writer’s Craft teacher once had us write a short story assignment called “Write What You Know”. She said that when you write from the heart, your reader can feel it in your words, and they will be that much more impacted.
And she was right. Some of the most inspired work I have ever done has been when I write what I know – whether it be a situation I have experienced, or a character based on someone I know, or simply an emotion I can strongly relate to.
3. What are you reading right now?
I am currently reading a biography about Elvis Presley, called Last Train to Memphisby Peter Guralnick. I’m only about 1/10thof the way through it, but so far it is great! I love learning about his upbringing and seeing a side of a famous musician that has never been publicized.
4. What kind of characters are the hardest to write?
This may seem obvious, but it is definitely those that are not similar to myself, such as men or older adults. I just simply find it difficult to get inside the mind of those people and portray it accurately. I’m envious of writers who can write from the perspective of those completely different from themselves.
5. Do you ever leave Easter eggs for your readers?
Yes, in a sense. I write a lot of books with twist endings, and my hope is always that the reader will go back and re-read the book, searching for those Easter eggs and hints of what is to come.
I did this a lot in my most recent book, The Sixth Book, and I have heard readers say they have gone back, curious to find what they missed the first time. To me, that is one of the biggest complements you can give me.
To find these Easter eggs for yourself, check out The Sixth Book today!
