Where Do You Find the Damn Time to Write?

Responsibilities are endless, and somehow only continue to grow. Between work, school, family, friends, house maintenance, or any other combination of responsibilities you may have, finding the time to write is a challenge in itself. Believe me, I’ve gone years without writing because I have been too busy.

But, that doesn’t always have to be the case. Here are my four tips to help you find the time for your passion:

1. Consider Writing a Responsibility

Just as you would consider your social life a responsibility, or cleaning your house a responsibility, consider writing one. By associating writing with being a necessity, you’re more likely to include it in your daily schedule and make the time.

2. Organize Your Priorities

It’s important to figure out what writing means to you. Where does it land on your list of priorities? What less important priority can it replace? Would you rather spend your night watching the new episode of your favourite show, or getting another 1,000 words in? If you’d rather watch the show, then that’s fully acceptable, but it’s important to understand where writing lies in your priorities.

3. Add Writing to Your Schedule

Sometimes it can be hard to fit an hour of writing into your busy schedule. But just as you would block off 8-ish hours for work every day, block off an hour for writing. Consider it a second job and schedule it into your days for an hour before work, right after work, or right before bed.

4. Only Write When You Want To

This may seem obvious, but a lot of people sit down to write without being in the right headspace for it. This leads to hours staring at a blank page and wasted time. And that eventually leads to a lack of motivation. Sit down to write only when you really want to, when your brain is fully functioning, and when you have ideas flowing. That’s when you’ll make the best use of what little time you have.
